The prohibition of Music
No matter how hard the modernists try to justify it, there is no doubt that music is haraam. Allah says in the quran, 'from amongst mankind are those who purchase lahwul-hadith (musical instruments, singers) to mislead from the straight path without knowledge and they take it as a form of entertainment, for such people is a humiliating punishment.' 'if you recite to them these verses, they become arrogant and turn a blind eye as though there is something blocking their ears, for such people is a painful punishment,' Surah Luqman Verse 6-7. Also it is stated in Surah Bani Israel that Allah told Shaytaan, 'mislead whomever you can from amongst them with your sound/voice' (i.e. Music) . This law is clearer than the sun and only the misguided ignore it. Nabi SAW has warned us that who ever tries to justify music, Allah will turn them into pigs and monkeys. This is narrated in Saheeh Bukhari. Furthermore Nabi SAW explained to us that, 'music creates hypocrisy in the hearts of believers,' and Allah tells us about the effect of music on people's hearts in the closing ayats of Surah Najm, 'are they surprised by this speech? And they laugh instead of cry, it is because they waste their time with musical entertainment' May Allah guide us all to the truth. Ameen. Note that this prohibition applies only to wind and string musical instruments, and not singing. Also there is an exception to this rule. That is the duff (hand drum) was used by the companions of the prophet (pbuh) therefore percussion is permissible. So singing and the drum are permissible if the lyrics are acceptable and it doesnt distract one from Allah. One of the main reasons for this prohibition is that music is a drug, a mood altering substance that takes the place of God in the lives and hearts of ppl who are involved in it
